Let me make this perfectly clear. I only watched the Oscars the year because of two factors: I wanted to see how many awards the movie The Help would receive and because Billy Crystal was hosting.
I think Viola Davis (Best Actress nominee) should have received an Oscar for her role like her co-star Octavia Spencer (Best Supporting Actress winner) did for The Help, and not Meryl Streep (Best Actress) for her role in The Iron Lady. There, I said it. I saw The Help with my family – three generations in one room – and we were all moved. We talked afterwards about life for my parents who grew up in the American South (Louisiana).
My hubby and I watched the movie The Iron Lady and you know what? We would have enjoyed it better as a theatrical play because that is how it flowed on screen. Let us also remember Ms. Streep has won 2 other Oscars as well. Did she earn a third with this movie? That’s debatable. But the makeup artists, Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland, did for transforming Streep into Margaret Thatcher!
Now for Mr. Crystal’s hosting style. Classy, well rehersed, and professional. No foul language and most importantly, family friendly! Three generations were in my family room watching the Oscars for the majority of the evening. That’s an accomplishment in and of itself!
Now, here’s a thought, when Eddie Murphy bowed out of hosting, why wasn’t Chris Rock asked to replace him? If the Oscars wanted an experienced, controversial, comedic black host, Mr. Rock could fit the bill. And given his presenter’s commentary on voice acting work, his biting insights into Hollywood would have made for an interesting show to watch and talk about the next morning.
